DI Boxes
A DI Box or direct injection box converts unbalanced and high impedance instrument signals into a format suitable for direct connection to the mic input of a mixing console. Unbalanced connections transmit a signal via a single connection and are receptive to background noise and interference. Whereas balanced audio connections have a ground, live and return that results in the cable rejecting interference as the signal is carried. The most common type of DI Box is the passive DI. This is used to match line level or instrument level sources such as guitars and keyboards and matches them to the mic inputs. Active DI Boxes have active circuitry - meaning they require power, which is usually supplied via phantom power or an internal battery.
