NVRs connect to a computer network and record HD video from the IP cameras connected to that network. NVRs differ from network-enabled DVRs in that NVRs are for use with IP cameras that record video via the network without any need of a physical connection between the IP cameras and the NVR, whereas a DVR and the CCTV cameras within the network must be physically connected via cables.
